Introduction: In a 1983 Gallup poll Americans were asked “who do you think Jesus is.”

70% of those interviewed said Jesus was not just another man.

42% stated Jesus was God among men.

27% felt Jesus was only human but divinely called.

9% states Jesus was divine because he embodied the best of humanity.

Also, 81% of Americans consider themselves to be Christians.

Gallup Poll, 1983.

We are going to be doing a comparison study tonight in this last message on the deity of Christ that I am going to bring.  When we compare things we examine and note the similarities and the differences between two or more things, ideas, or people.  You ladies do this all the time when you are at the store shopping - comparing the prices of two items, comparing the handiwork of two pieces of clothing, etc.   We sometimes say, “There is no comparison between ....”

Tonight I want to compare what a number of New Testament passages of scripture have to say about Christ - the Lord - to Old Testament passages of scripture that say the same thing about Jehovah - the LORD.  The point of the study is, through many examples, is to drive home the truth that the God of the Old Testament is also the God of the New Testament - the Lord Jesus Christ.

A. Matt. 3:3 with Isa. 40:3

1. Matthew 3:1-3 says, In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord (kuriou), make his paths straight.

2. Isaiah 40:3 says, “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD (Jehovah), make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”

B. Matt. 11:5 with Isa. 35:4-6

1. Matthew 11:1-5 says, And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities. Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, and said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

2. Isaiah 35:4-6 Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God (Elohim) will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.

C. Matt. 16:27 with Ps. 62:12

1. Matthew 16:27 says, For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

2. Psalm 62:12 Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work.

3. We studied this aspect of Christ’s office last week - his power to judge all men.

D. Jn. 19:37 with Zech. 12:10

1. John 19:37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

2. Zechariah 12:10 says, And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

3. The “I” is identified in Zech 12:8 as the LORD or the angel of the LORD.  Clearly John is referring to the Lord Jesus Christ.

E. Acts 2:20-21 and Romans 10:9-13 with Joel 2:32

1. Acts 2:20-22 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

2. Romans 10:9-13 says, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

3. Joel 2:32 says, And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.

4. This text in Joel, starting with verse 28 is quoted in Acts 2 in Paul’s message on the day of Pentecost.

F. Phil. 2:10 and Romans 14:10-12 with Isa. 45:23

1. Philippians 2:10 says, That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

2. Romans 14:10-12 says, But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

3. Isaiah 45:21-23 says, Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Savior; there is none beside me. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

G. Heb. 1:10 with Ps. 102:25-27

1. Hebrews 1:10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:

2. We have already examined this verse before and know from the context that it is speaking of Jesus Christ.

3. Psalm 102:25-27 says, Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.

4. Psalm 102:22,24 identify who is being spoken of in verses 25-27 - the LORD, and God.

H. 1 Pet. 2:6 with Isa. 28:16

1. 1 Peter 2:5,6 says, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

2. Isaiah 28:16 says, Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

I. 1 Peter 2:8 with Isaiah 8:13,14

1. 1 Peter 2:8 says, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

2. It is clear from the context of 1 Peter 2:8 (we saw this in the last point under 1 Peter 2:6), that the one being described in verse 8 is Christ.

3. Isaiah 8:13,14 says, Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Conclusion: This has been a simple comparison of New Testament scriptures with Old Testament scriptures to prove that the Jehovah, the Elohim of the Old Testament is the Kurios, the Lord of the New Testament.  I believe that is nothing to debate about - Jesus is as much God as the Jehovah is God - there is no difference.  In closing this study on the deity of Christ I come back to a truth I started with - it is absolutely necessary for a person to believe in the deity of Jesus Christ if they want to be saved.  To believe anything else than this about Jesus Christ is to place one’s trust in someone other than the Christ of the Word of God.  For those who believe this about Jesus Christ, there is the need to know how to use the Word of God to declare as plainly as we can this vital truth to those we talk with about the Lord and their need of salvation.  Many will not listen and will regret one day that they rejected what the Bible clearly declares concerning the deity of Jesus Christ.
